We turn to Black History Month to reflect on the past while dreaming of the future. So many of us forget to care for ourselves in the present, overlooking the spiritual compass inside. How can empower ourselves to blossom in an often-unforgiving world? What does mental health, literacy, and spiritual wellness look and feel like? On 2/17, the Anacostia Arts Center will host Afro House: Spirit Fest from 11 AM to 5 PM. The day long festival will include live performances from local creatives , a creative marketplace, and so much more.

Born I: Intereactive Soundbath

Get ready to immerse yourself in a one of a kind sound bath in our Black Box Theater.

Bio

Hailing from the Washington DC area, Born I is an artist holding space at the intersection of Hip Hop and Mindfulness. A lyricist who can move seamlessly through genres, Born I’s diverse influences include Wu-Tang Clan, Andre3000 and Alice Coltrane.

To date, Born I’s music has received over 20 million collective streams across platforms, with a presence in Hip Hop, EDM and Hybrid genres. He has garnered nods from artists like Steve Aoki and more.

Smudge Stick Lab, Presented by Blk Flower Market

A Smudge Stick Lab is not your traditional flower design workshop! Learn more about yourself and others through the lens of flowers and design, engaging in sensory activities (you may be blindfolded at one point during our Smudge Stick Lab… fair warning!), exploring the medicinal and cultural context of florals, and learning floral design techniques to create beautiful arrangements.

Bio

 Born in Washington, DC and spending years between Philadelphia and the District, Kehmari Norman has amassed an impressive career in community organizing and urban agriculture prior to founding BLK FLWR MRKT, a floral studio based in her hometown. BLK FLWR MRKT creates products and experiences with flowers that bridges the gap between people’s culture and floriculture. This model reflects her passion and work in the world of horticulture, founding city-wide events like the Black Growers Month Conference, and hosting original flower workshops like Smudge Stick Labs.

Jaliyaa Coffee, Mohamed Jalloh

Jaliyaa Coffee will provide coffee and tea all day during Afro House.

Bio

Mohamed Jalloh, born in Maryland to Sierra Leonean immigrant parents, has dedicated over 19 years to the food and beverage industry, enriching his career with a profound commitment to philanthropy. His journey led him to found Jaliyaa Coffee, a company that champions ethically sourced African coffees, reflecting his deep connection to his African heritage and his dedication to fair, community-supportive business practices.

DJ RBI, Afro House DJ Curator

DJ RBI’s legion of extrordinary DJs will be in the house to provide the day’s soundtrack.

Bio

DJ RBI is an influential and legendary fixture of the DMV music community. An artist & entrepreneur, he endeavors in the arts & entertainment, notably thru DJing, production, and mentorship. He works as producer / DJ / programmer / host of 89.3 FM WPFW’s “ILL Street Grooves” and “Capitol ILL” and is a regular staple in the entertainment circuit, spinning at various clubs, venues, and events.

Supporting Black Owned business means creating space for patrons to hear the stories behind emerging bands. Taste N Shop, a celebration of Black entrepreneurship in partnership with Anacostia Arts Center, puts you face to face with a leader in the food and beverage community each session. Featured culinary leaders will have their signature dishes and beverages available for attendees to taste while a fireside chat style workshop takes place.

This session, a featured activation during Afro House Spirit Fest, features two dynamic Black owman owned businesses in the DMV. Come by for a meet and greet, fireside chat, and free tasting during the event.
